Finding Myself Across the Globe: Embracing Identity Expansion While Living Abroad

Hello! In my last blog entry, I shared some of the challenges I faced when I moved to the US. Today, I want to discuss a positive experience that marked my journey as an immigrant. Leaving my home country led me to discover new aspects of myself and expand my identity in ways I never thought possible. As it turns out, stepping out of our comfort zones can be the most enriching experiences of our lives. So, grab a cup of coffee (if that’s your thing), and let’s dive into another aspect of this transformative journey together!

During my first few months in the US, I missed my friends and family. While that led to some sense of loneliness, it also opened new doors. For the first time, I was free to explore and experiment without preconceived notions of who I was, what I should be or what I should want. This freedom allowed me to grow in ways I could never have anticipated.

The more I explored the outside world, the more my sense of self evolved. I was more than just a son, a brother, a friend, or an employee. I was a complex individual. I was someone exploring new things, like photography, young adult literature, and sustainable living. I also found myself drawn to courses in anthropology and psychology, which broadened my understanding of the world and my place in it.

Another significant aspect of my identity expansion came from accepting my sexual orientation. At the age of 33, after years of self-discovery and struggle, I came out as a gay man. The support and love I received from the people around me, helped me embrace this part of my identity with confidence.

My newfound interests and self-acceptance opened me to another aspect of my life that had been there all along, but I never allowed to grow: my passion for writing. So, I attended book signings, and writing workshops and conferences. Allowing my passion for writing to grow has enriched my life and reshaped my identity.

The positive impact of my time abroad on my identity has been truly transformative. I’ve become more open-minded, empathetic, and adaptable. I’ve also discovered strengths and passions that I may never have uncovered had I stayed in my home country, surrounded by the love and expectations of family and friends.

As I embark on a new adventure seeking to become a licensed therapist, I want to explore the concept of identity expansion from a more theoretical perspective. For now, I hope sharing my story has inspired you to embrace your own journey of self-discovery and identity expansion.

Life is an adventure, and sometimes the most unexpected experiences can teach us the most about ourselves. Go ahead and explore the world, both within and beyond your borders – you might just be surprised at the person you’ll become.

To spark reflection, here are three questions to ponder:

1. When have you stepped out of your comfort zone, and how did it impact your sense of self?

2. What aspects of your identity have you discovered or developed while living abroad?

3. How do you continue to expand your identity in your daily life?

Until next time!
