Today we have the privilege of featuring an interview with Dr. Alyx MacTernan, a figure whose expertise and passion in the field of mental health have inspired many, including myself. In my first term at Palo Alto University’s counseling program, I had the pleasure of having Dr. MacTernan as an instructor.

Born and raised in Northern California, Dr. MacTernan has traversed the United States, gaining a profound understanding of diversity and inclusion. With over three decades of experience as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, her journey is one of dedication and an unwavering commitment to help others tread their own paths towards fulfillment.
Her personal life is as rich and engaging as her professional one, shared with her wife and daughter, exploring the scenic beauty of California and cherishing moments with friends and family.
In this interview, Dr. MacTernan shares her motivations for pursuing a career in mental health, her perspectives on the challenges facing the field, and her experiences that have shaped her approach to teaching and counseling. She also discusses the evolving role of technology in mental health and offers advice to students embarking on the journey of becoming licensed therapists.
Roque Neto: What inspired you to pursue a career in mental health and academia?
Dr. MacTernan: As a child, I was always curious as to why people did the things they did. Why did they choose specific behaviors? Why did they say the things they said? That curiosity continued, deepened, and motivated me to explore more about human behavior and psychology overall. I have a family history of mental illness as well, so those experiences nudged me toward the journey of mental health. As for academia, I have always wanted to teach. Wanting to help others, to me, also means teaching others about themselves and the field. Advocacy and leadership came naturally to me. I believe that we have to be the change we want to see, and for me, that starts with teaching my future fellow peers.
Roque Neto: From your perspective, what are the most significant challenges facing the field of mental health today?
Dr. MacTernan: The most significant challenges facing the mental health field today are access to affordable care and stigma. Unfortunately, the field is riddled with stigma, although diminishing slowly, it still remains. Affordability and access are huge barriers.
Roque Neto: Could you share an impactful experience or a pivotal moment in your career that shaped your approach to teaching and counseling?
Dr. MacTernan: Great question! I cannot say that it was one specific moment that helped to shape my approach. I will say, that it is ongoing experiences that continue to shape how I teach. I am intrinsically driven to connect with others. Teaching for me is a passion, a responsibility, and a privilege. Connecting with students each quarter, seeing lightbulb moments, witnessing connections between students, and experiencing vulnerable moments in class, all are pivotal moments that solidify my commitment to this field.
Roque Neto: How do you see the role of technology evolving in mental health therapy and education?
Dr. MacTernan: Technology is rapidly advancing, with pros and cons. I believe that AI will help, more than harm, the field of mental health therapy and education. Streamlining access to care, measuring and reporting progress, providing offerings of apps for coping skills and setting daily reminders for mental health needs, all of these examples will assist clients and students to reach personal goals. There will need to be a balance of human interaction and connection, as I wholeheartedly believe that the personal connection is what drives change.
Roque Neto: Are there any emerging trends or areas in mental health that prospective counselors should pay particular attention to?
Dr. MacTernan: I am seeing more desire for telehealth services and less for in person. There are some clients that need in person care, and some clients that prefer the accessibility of online platforms for their mental health needs. I am also seeing the trend of more tech and AI, as mentioned above. Keeping on top of developing trends is imperative for ethical clinical care.
Roque Neto: What advice would you offer students who are just beginning their journey toward becoming a licensed therapist?
Dr. MacTernan: Patience. Be patient with yourself. This is a journey. The learning never stops. Breathe. It will take time to reach the licensure point. It is supposed to. You will learn along the way, who you are, why you want to do this amazing work, and how to best practice your theoretical orientation. Enjoy the journey.
In closing this interview, I extend my gratitude to Dr. Alyx MacTernan for taking the time to share her insights with us, and enriching our journey with her expertise and passion.
I will see you next week!
