Unclehood

Last week in the Counseling program, we engaged in activities that required us to reflect on some of the roles we play in life. Each time, the role of being an uncle has stood out to me. So, I have been thinking about it a lot, and today, I want to share my reflection with you.

I am the uncle to nephews and a niece, and I feel lucky to witness their growth and development from a unique vantage point, unclouded by parental anxieties. It’s a unique blend of objectivity and closeness, allowing me to witness their blossoming personalities and partake in their journeys without the pressing need to mold them. This perspective offers a fresh pair of eyes to observe, understand, and cherish their development.

Watching my niece transform from a little girl with dreams of visiting “Paris and France” to a knowledgeable young woman discussing great books with profound insights has been a journey of amazement. The innocence and simplicity of her childhood wishes have evolved into deep, intellectual conversations that never cease to surprise.

Her journey from innocence to the depths of knowledge is a testament to the profound transformations that I have been fortunate to witness, a metamorphosis that has enriched our bond and added layers of depth to our conversations.

My nephews and niece teach me what life is all about. The unfiltered aspirations and energy of the young minds have been a constant source of revelations, allowing me to revisit and rediscover the forgotten realms of childhood and the questioning mindset of youth.

It’s like watching a flower bloom. You don’t interfere with its natural process, you just enjoy the beauty of its existence. This perspective has not only allowed me to understand them better but has also provided insights that are often missed by the parental eye.

This freedom also allows me to be someone they can talk to about the things they might not be comfortable discussing with their parents. However, this freedom is not without its sense of responsibility. Not for a second do I forget that I want to be a positive role model, a guiding light, and a warm presence, all while maintaining a balance and respecting their boundaries and developmental needs.

The role of an uncle is about experiencing unconditional love, seeing life from a different vantage point, and growing together. It’s a reminder of the profound depth of human connection, in the amazing, and sometimes messy, human system we call family.

As I finalize this reflection, I can only conclude that my deep appreciation for being an uncle stems from my own experiences as a nephew. Throughout my life, my uncles and great-uncles have consistently been pillars of support, always there when I needed them the most. Their subtle and discreet gestures of affection and care have left an indelible mark on me, guiding me in my journey of unclehood and reinforcing the invaluable bond of family love.

Until next time!
