Reflections on a Transformative Week: My First Residency Experience

This past week I experienced a milestone in my journey to becoming a licensed therapist. I had the privilege of attending Residency I, a full-week event that gathered over 90 counselors in training from across the country and abroad. The experience was nothing short of transformative. As I reflect on the days spent there, I am filled with a sense of empowerment and connection that I am excited to share today.

Our days began with sessions led by faculty, engaging all students in discussions on program specifics or counseling techniques. These larger gatherings set the tone for the day, infusing us with new knowledge before we headed to our smaller groups. These groups were extensions of our Counseling Skills course, a familiar setting where we have honed our foundational skills. We also had two special luncheons, one with the Provost and the other with the President of Palo Alto University.

The heart of the residency was centered around the integration of both basic and advanced counseling skills. In a series of role-playing exercises, we took turns being mock clients and counselors, providing each other with a unique opportunity to apply what we have learned in a controlled yet impactful environment. Under the caring gaze of our instructors, we engaged in these scenarios, receiving specific feedback.

What stood out to me most was the shift in my focus during these exercises. Initially, my attention was on showcasing the techniques at hand, but as the week progressed, I found myself becoming more attuned to the client sitting across from me. This shift was subtle but impactful. I left the residency feeling more competent in my skills and empowered as a counselor in training.

Beyond the practical experience, this residency fostered a sense of connection among cohort members. For months, our interactions had been confined to Zoom screens, and this week allowed us to step out from behind our cameras and truly see each other as the full human beings we are. The sense of community, the shared understanding that “we are in this together,” provided comfort and confidence that made practicing in front of peers and faculty less daunting and more enriching.

I cannot express my gratitude enough to the Counseling department at Palo Alto University for creating an environment where taking risks and learning from them was encouraged and celebrated. A special shout out to Dr. Darlene Chen, our instructor, whose guidance was instrumental in facilitating impactful learning experiences throughout the week. Her encouragement to delve deeper into our practice has left a mark on my professional development.

Reflecting on this residency, I realize it has elevated my journey to becoming a licensed therapist. The skills sharpened, the bonds formed, and the personal growth experienced during this week have filled me with excitement for what lies ahead. To my colleagues and the faculty, thank you for facilitating this amazing experience. The path to becoming a licensed therapist is long and challenging, but with experiences like these and the support of such a strong community, I am reminded of why I embarked on this journey in the first place. I am excited for the next steps we will take together, fortified by the knowledge, skills, and connections we have forged along the way.

I will see you next week!
